Congratulations Caitlin Sorkhabi received the Student of the Quarter Award that is offered by the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce, Women in Business for outstanding achievement academically at SHS. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Awards Awards Awards It is that time of year for underclassmen awards: Clara Hartman was awarded 1st Place for Cooperative Marketing at the California State Level FFA at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo!! What started as a fun project to share his family's love of basketball has turned into a full-time job for Soquel's Casey Curtiss -- a job he's now getting paid for. YouTube selected Curtiss' online instructional basketball video series, called Shot Science, as one of 25 winners of the website's inaugural Next Up contest Monday. The contest is designed to help promote the talents and careers of some of YouTube's best video producers. Each of the winners will travel to New York later this month to attend the first YouTube Creator Camp for training and mentoring on how to build the brand, and receive a $35,000 grant to spend on their projects. Read more. Leia Alex was selected to participate in CSSSA (California State Summer School for the Arts, formerly InnerSpark), a highly competitive governor's school for the arts. Leia will study painting, figure drawing, design and Art and Culture in an intensive 4-week program at CalArts this summer. Additionally, Leia is going to Mexico earlier in the summer to complete her Girl Scout Gold Award by designing and painting a mural at an orphanage in Morelia. Thanks to judges Ms. Dawson, Ms. Lambert, Mr. Rovick, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Lawrence-Emanuel Contestants were Sam Brodkey, Kyle Dolton, Michael Donnelly, Wesley Echelbarger, Shawn Fisher, Tommy Knight, Michael Macy, Daniel Schwartz and Sam Smith. Surprise guests were Rodrigo Plaza, last year's Mr. SHS who flew in from Boston crown this year's winner, and Austin Caisse. Congrats to the 2ndrunner up Shawn Fisher the 1strunner up, Sam Smith. The royal wedding has nothing on the royalty at Soquel High School. Thanks to all who watched, helped and cheered. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
The bands recently returned from the Heritage Festival held in Anaheim and were awarded the following: "A" Jazz Band won a Gold Award, took 2nd place in their division and won the coveted Adjudicator Award. Our "B" Jazz Band won a Silver Award and took 3rd place in their division. Our Concert Band won a Silver Award and took 2nd place in their division. We also won the Spirit of Anaheim Award for the band that best represents the spirit of the festival. There were about 4,000 students at this festival. IT WAS HUGE!!!! There were bands from Alaska, Alabama, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, and even Canada!!! Great job everyone and thanks to Mr. Stewart.
The Jazz Singers awarded 4th place of 48 groups at the Reno Jazz Festival. Congratulations to those students and Mr. Bidelman. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ We very pleased to share with you that Christina Dooka, a Soquel High School student musician, will be performing on the violin with the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony on Sun., March 6, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium Santa Cruz Youth Symphony The Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony is composed of the most talented classical musicians under the age of twenty in the County. For this concert, SCCYS musicians will be performing side-by-side with the professional musicians of the Santa Cruz County Symphony. If there are any other enthusiastic musicians in the student body, please know that auditions to join the SCC Youth Symphony mid-season for our third concert set will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 5:45 p.m. at Georgiana Bruce Kirby School. Congratulations to Soquel High water polo stars Max Schell and Caleb Conroy for making First Team All-CCS, and Zack Westervelt and goalie Daniel Schwartz for making Second Team. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Soquel High Girls Volleyball team's incredible 2010 season ended with a 27-7 record and as SCCAL co-champions, sharing the league title with Aptos High. The Lady Knights entered the CCS championship playoff seeded No. 1 in Division IV. In a heartbreaking 3-1 loss, they ended the season in the CCS semifinals against private-school powerhouse Sacred Heart Prep. The highlights of the season were two stunning wins against previous SSCAL champion Aptos High, and the well-deserved honors of outside hitter Bria Morgan receiving SCCAL co-MVP, setter Regine Graves and libero Camille Steber making SCCAL first team, and players Alex Quinn, Cassidy Donaldson, and Faith Apolski receiving league honorable mentions. With no seniors on the team this year, next year's season is looking bright for the Soquel High Lady Knights. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Caitlin Sorkhabi, Soquel High Junior, has been awarded "The Student of the Quarter" by the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce, Women in Business. The purpose of the program is to publicly recognize a female high school student who has demonstrated academic success and shown an interest in business-related course work offered at her school. Caitlin was honored at the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce, Women in Business luncheon on Dec. 9 at the Cocoanut Grove. Congratulations, Caitlin! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2010 Homecoming Parade ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bravo! The B-6 Advanced Ceramics class donated 42 lovely bowls to the Loaves and Fishes organization in Watsonville to be raffled off (http://www.pvloavesandfishes.org/fundraise.htm). Mikaela Streeter, senior, is a full-time equestrian athlete. She has received her High School Varsity Letter from the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) aboard her horse “Cash” for her success in training and competing. Her team also received 4th place overall in the United States Pony Club West Coast Championships show jumping competition in July. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Congratulations to Caitlin N. Degnon and Kevin A. Houchen; they are Commended Students from the National Merit Scholarship program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2011 competition for National Merit scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Congratulations to Soquel High junior Alexandra Baker, who was selected as an intern in Washington D.C. this fall. From the Sept. 4, 2010 Santa Cruz Sentinel: "Alexandra Baker from Soquel will leave this week for Washington, D.C., to take classes at the Library of Congress, work on the House floor and visit the city's historical landmarks. To be eligible to apply for the page program, students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and must be at least 16 when the program begins." |
