17th CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE TITL
With a 9-8 victory over Aptos on November 5th, the Soquel High Boys Waterpolo Team won the 2011 Tri-County Athletic League Mountain Division Championship. Incredibly, Head Coach Marcelo Adas and the Knights have now won 17 consecutive League Titles. Soquel has won 78 straight league games! Since first winning the League Title in 1995, the Knights have an astounding league record of 216 wins against just 2 losses.Advancing to the 2011 CCS Championships, Soquel proceeded to defeat Archbishop Mitty 13-12 in the CCS Quarter-Finals. The Knights would face top seeded Sacred Heart Prep in the CCS Semi-Finals. After going down 3-0 early in the first period, the Knights would roar back with 4 straight goals of their own and let SHP know that they were in for a battle. All six Knight starters would score in this game with Max Schell and Ivan Silva scoring 3 goals apiece, 2 goals each from Cullen Raisch, Max Draga and Max Somple and 1 goal from Zach Westervelt. Soquel played their best polo of the season, taking a 13-12 lead into the final minutes of the game before losing 16-13 to the team that would go on to win the 2011 CCS Championship. Brian Kreutzkamp, the SHP Head Coach, had nothing but the highest praise for the Soquel players, telling reporters from the Mercury News and San Mateo Daily Journal that Soquel was "the most dangerous team in CCS" and "They have all the tools and the best player in CCS in Schell. What makes Soquel so good is their balance. They have a lot of scorers." Marcelo was proud of his team as well, " I'm happy...Today, we were closer than ever. We were controlling the game. We played the #1 seed and we showed we got some players, too."Soquel players would, indeed, accumulate a number of individual honors when CCS and TCAL coaches would vote for the elite players of 2011:
Senior Max Schell: TCAL Senior Player of the Year; TCAL MVP; CCS MVP; TCAL and CCS First Team Senior Cullen Raisch: TCAL First Team and CCS Second Team Senior Zach Westervelt: TCAL First Team and CCS Second Team Junior Max Draga: TCAL First Team and CCS Second Team Sophomore Ivan Silva: TCAL Sophomore Player of the Year, TCAL Second Team Freshman Max Somple: TCAL Freshman Player of the Year, TCAL Second Team
