WEIRD WEEK
It's the first week of the month, which means a revised schedule and a minimum day on Wednesday. The schedule is Monday-B day, Tuesday-A day, Wednesday-minimum B day, Thursday A day, Friday B Day.

MEET THIS WEEK
Soquel High families, please join other Soquel High families and Soquel community members at Tuesday's Soquel High Fund Meeting! The following items will be discussed: The Homecoming Dance and Parade, The Knights of the Round Table Parent Group, and The Spring Golf Tournament. Principal Ken Lawrence-Emanuel will also give his very informative monthly "Principal's Report." If you are not able to attend this month's meeting please check the SHF website at soquelhighfund.org for up coming events and meeting dates. The Soquel High Fund looks forward to seeing you at Tuesday's meeting.

COLLEGE NIGHT COMING SOON

Please join us at Soquel High School's Parent College Night on Tuesday, October 11th from 6:00-7:30pm beginning in our high school library. Representatives from UC, CSU and Cabrillo Colleges will discuss application and admission requirements. High school graduation requirements and college preparation will also be discussed, with Spanish translation available.

SUPER SCHOLARS

It is our pleasure to announce that Soquel High senior Clara Hartman has been named semi-finalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. She will be continuing in the Merit Scholarship competition.
Also, Alexandra Quinn and Leia Alex have been named commended students for the National Merit program. They are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise and have placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students.

Congratulations to Clara, Alex, and Leia. We are proud of these Soquel Knights!

 
HUMANITIES ACADEMY FIELD TRIP
HA students planning to go to the Renaissance Fair on Sunday, Oct. 9, please meet in the parking lot near the tennis courts at 9 a.m. sharp if you are signed up to attend this field trip. Pick up at same location about 3:30 p.m.

SPECIAL ED OPPORTUNITIES
Special Ed Parents and Teachers: The Community Advisory Committee of North Santa Cruz County is composed of volunteer parents of children with specials needs and educators that seek to support children with special needs education. We offers workshops with regards to special education topics, all workshops are free. On Oct. 26 the workshop is "Inclusion on the Playground" presented by Diedre Hickey-Sturm. TEST DRIVE FUNDRAISER
Take the Wheel and DriveOne 4 Your School - and it is Free! Event sponsored by the Soquel High Girls' Volleyball and North Bay Ford - other teams and clubs can participate. On Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 - 3:30 to 10 p.m. at Soquel High School, take a free test drive and Ford Motor Company will donate up to $6,000 to our school. Each eligible test drive will earn $20 for our school.
Pick your favorite sport or club and 50 percent of the donation will be give to the organization of your choice. Plus have the chance to win $100 Best Buy Gift Card. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and produce a valid driver's license. Limit of one donation per household.

FREE E-WASTE RECYCLING
A free e-waste recycling event, to benefit the Class of 2012 Grad Night, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in the lower parking lot at Soquel High. All types of office equipment, electrical items, small appliances, vehicle batteries, etc. will be accepted. Drive up and drop off. We'll even unload it for you!

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Live Oak Elementary School PTO (Home & School Club) will be holding a CAR WASH to raise funds. Needs as many hands as possible to make the event as successful as possible. Event will be held at the school main parking lot, 1916 Capitola Road, on October 8th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are looking for student volunteers needing to do community service, you help us and we'll help you. It would be great to see some alumni come back and help out at LO. We will be ready to sign you off when you complete the time you are willing to give us. Stu Walters, SHS Athletic Director, wishes to send out a BIG THANKS to all that took the time to not only vote, but also to encourage your friends and family to vote as well in the KION Sports Blitz website contest. Because of all of you out there, we went from last place in the vote ranking to FIRST PLACE!!! KION came out to our game and highlighted our team. And soon Soquel High Athletics will be receiving a check for $500. This was a great opportunity to earn a little extra money for our school and all it cost you was just a little bit of time! JUST KNOW IT IS APPRECIATED GREATLY!!!

 

PARKING PERMITS

Last week to get your forms in. Applications are now available in the Front Office from Cheryl. All forms are to be turned in by 10/7 and ticketing will begin 10/10. Completed forms get to Tjoni FIRST.


PSAT DISCOUNT EXTENDED

The PSAT for juniors to be eligible for National Merit Scholarships will be held Saturday, October 15 and the is $25 price has been extended through Oct. 13. Register in the Finance Office. Sophomores may also register. Don't delay in signing up, as there are a limited number of PSAT tests available.

SAVEMART AND NOB HILL/RALEY CARDS: Send an email with your address and we can mail you these cards. Savemart - you just need to swipe before you pay and 3 percent will be donated. At Nob Hill/Raleys 1 to 4 percent is donated, but you do need to register your card (we do not see any personal information - it's just a way to send us the amount we've earned). Again, we can mail to your house or they can be picked up at home football games.

The first school-wide dance in quite some time is in the planning process. The students are EXCITED! We are in need of parent volunteers!!!

  • Want to help plan the dance and organize with the student volunteers? Then we want you too!
  • Can you provide a meal for the Wednesday lunch time student meetings held on campus? Then we want you too!
  • Want to work the night of? Then we want you too! Several different jobs available the night of the dance that require adults so that the kids can just enjoy their social event.
  • Do you have a connection for food, snacks, and beverages for the evening's concession stand helping to keep costs down for this ASB Fundraiser? Then we want you too!

$500: This is a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, (not GPA), as determined by the evaluated essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. Good Tidings: Deadline: November 7

Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each (20 total) to students residing in the Central Coast and Greater Bay Area. Good Tidings is a non-profit charity that empowers students to reach their dreams. The scholarships are awarded to seniors who recognize the benefits of serving their communities. All are encouraged to apply, but consideration is given to those of greatest needs. Santa Cruz Elks Lodge: Deadline: December 2

he Santa Cruz Elks Lodge has six scholarships for graduating seniors in this area. There is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for a boy and girl from the lodge. Total scholarships are $3000. The 1st place students then go on to compete in the District contest, on to the State and then on to the National competition.

California-Hawaii Elks Vocational Grant: Ongoing applications - No deadline

$1000: The program is open to any prospective applicant, residing in California or Hawaii who is an American Citizen, planning to pursue an eligible vocational/technical (voc/tech) course, culminating in a terminal associate degree, diploma or certificate, but less than a baccalaureate program (Bachelor's degree). Applications must be filed with the Scholarship Chairman, Exalted Ruler or Secretary of the Elks Lodge having jurisdiction in the area of the student's legal residence. Must be a U.S. citizen
