For leading Soquel High to its first CCS basketball title, Ragine Graves... (Bill Lovejoy/Sentinel)

Less than 24 hours after competing in the CIF NorCal Division IV Championship for volleyball in late November, Ragine Graves was back on the gymnasium floor, this time playing basketball at the Glenn Ventura Classic in San Jose. She led Soquel High to a 59-46 win by scoring a team-high 15 points and pulling down nine rebounds over Santa Teresa.“She's just such an unbelievable athlete,” Soquel coach John Wilson said. Graves shined in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play and earned league coaches' Most Valuable Player honor as a result. She can now add Sentinel All-County Player of the Year for girls basketball to her growing list of accolades that also includes a league co-MVP honor from volleyball season.“All outstanding players make their teammates better, and I think she definitely exemplified that,” Wilson said. “Her presence, her playing, makes everybody better. She brings the best out of everybody else.”There were other players in the county who had better statistics than Graves. She finished the year by leading the Knights in points [13.63 per game] and rebounds [6.6], and was second on the team in steals and third on the team in assists. But few were asked to play out of position for most of the game.Wilson positioned Graves, at 5-foot-7, in the high post to start most games in order to make room for Soquel's perimeter players in the lineup. She was a power forward in a guard's body.“It was what the team needed,” Graves said, “so it worked out.”

“And we wouldn't suffer,” Wilson added, “no matter where you positioned her.”A leader by example and an unstoppable presence in the open court, Graves deposited a season-high 29 points against St. Francis in the SCCAL Tournament semifinals — 15 in the first half at forward, 14 in the second half as a slashing wing.“She's fantastic. She's the kind of kid where the bigger the game, the bigger the numbers she's going to put up,” Scotts Valley coach Jim Hart said. “I saw her play Santa Cruz [in the regular-season finale], and she was phenomenal.”Graves scored 27 points and pulled down nine boards in that game, helping Soquel clinch the regular-season SCCAL title. She then tied a team-high by averaging nearly 12 points per game through the Central Coast Section playoffs, helping the Knights to the school's first D-IV title. She expects to continue playing volleyball next year while attending the University of Chicago.

John Wilson, coach

Soquel High

Wilson helped guide Soquel to the school’s first Central Coast Section basketball title, beating Mercy of San Francisco in the Division IV final. With a team that returned three starters, Wilson’s Knights won the Sana Cruz Coast Athletic League regular season title with an 11-1 record. Though they didn’t win the SCCAL Tournament, they reached the CCS finals for the fourth time.

Students Participate in Forestry Challenge

Eight Soquel High School students spent a week in October creating a land use plan in Redwood Christian Park, north of Boulder Creek along Highway 9. Their efforts earned them a "School Spirit Award."

The 2011 Santa Cruz Forestry Challenge involved 45 students from six schools throughout Northern California.

The 9.5-acre property the exercise took place on is owned by a trust and is near two parcels zoned for timber production under the same ownership.

The property is currently zoned for special use. In the challenge, students were asked if the timber designation made more sense than the special use designation and to provide environmental impact reports for the decision they made.

Challenge participants then spent a day visiting the site, collecting field data and interacting with natural resource professionals before preparing a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation.
