Water Test Report

14 February 2008

Dear Soquel Community Members,

With great reluctance, I must announce that the pools at Soquel High School are closed until further notice, effective today.

Recently, the District received a complaint from a family suggestingthat the water in our pools might not be healthy for students. TheDistrict consulted with a hazardous materials expert, and had the poolwater tested. The water tested positive for fiberglass, which, according to the expert, “has been associated with contact dermatitis.”Their recommendation is to drain, clean, and repair the pools.

The District had already scheduled a complete renovation of the poolsto begin in May.  However, in light of this complaint and the reportfrom the hazardous materials expert, we have decided to shut down thepools now and try to move forward with the renovation project as soonas we can bid it. This decision has been made, against all of ourwishes, in consultation with the school site administration, thedistrict, and the coaches of our on and off-site teams. We findourselves in a position where we simply have no choice but to make thisunpopular move.

I have spoken with the current pool users, including the coaches of theSoquel High swim team and the Wax’em Water polo club, and we areworking with them to find alternative sites for their team activities.

I understand how disruptive this action will be to both the school andclub teams. While it is not our intention to negatively impact thesestrong programs, we understand that it is the inevitable result. Forthat I am sorry, and can only say that, as a school and district, wemust act to safeguard the safety of our students in every way possible,so we have no choice but to act as we are in this situation.

Your comments and suggestions on this issue are of course welcome. Please contact me at the email or phone number listed to have yourinput heard.

Sincerely,

Ken Lawrence-Emanuel
