Frequently Asked Questions & Answers for Volleyball players and their parents

Q:    What does my $135 donation made out to Soquel High Athletics pay for?
A:    SC City Schools pays 60% of Coach pay, the Principal’s budget 40%, and your donation offsets this 40%.

Q:    What do door fees collected at games pay for?
A:    100% of door fees go to pay for referees and other associated fees for all three teams.  Fees are set by the SCCAL (Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League).  A great deal: buy a Family Pass, it admits 2 Adults/2 Children to all sporting events at Soquel for that year.

Q:    How are uniforms & equipment (balls, nets, carts, etc.) paid for?
A:    100% fundraising. All uniforms and equipment are owned by the VB Program and must be returned to the school at the end of the season for athlete use the following year.

Q:    Who does the fundraising?
A:    Parents & players (with coach approval & parental supervision).

Q:    What fundraisers have been done?
A:    Snack Bar at every Varsity, and Freshman &  JV games if possible, donated to & run by parents. Working at community events, yard sales, coupon books, parent-solicited banners (hanging in the gym) that generate annual fees. FYI: Car washes have typically been frowned upon because it puts our athletes in the public eye (so to speak).

Q:    Can I initiate a team or program fundraiser?
A:    Yes. Consult with the Coach/parents and be responsible for it from start to finish.

Q:    What can I do to help the team?
A:    Check with the Coach & other parents throughout the season to see where you’re needed.

Your high school athlete will most likely demand that you take a back seat in activities.  Athletic programs depend on fund-aising, so find a way to help from the back seat!!

Q:    Where are funds deposited?
A:    Directly to the Soquel High Fund account at the bank. Forms are in the office to the left of Cheryl’s desk, on the wall. Have all checks made out to Soquel High Fund, with Girls (or Boys) Volleyball on info line. Administered by parents.

There is another account, the ASB account, in the Finance Office at Soquel High.  Checks, made out to Soquel High Sports, with Girls (or Boys) Volleyball on the info line, go here. This account is used to pay tournament fees, etc. and is administered by the Coach, Soquel Students, and SC City Schools.

Q:    How do I make a donation directly to the Volleyball Program?
A:    You can write your check to either one of the above accounts, just make sure to put Girls or Boys Volleyball on the info line. If it’s important to you that the funds be used just for equipment or uniforms, make it out to the Soquel High Fund.

Q:    My athlete is on the Freshman/JV team. Why should I help fundraise? Doesn’t it primarily benefit the Varsity team?

A:    Fundraising benefits the entire Girls/Boys VB Program. Consider this:

-Varsity games bring in more door fees due to higher attendance numbers
-Varsity parents work more fund-raising events/snack bars
-Varsity represents Soquel High School in competitive SCCAL play

Freshman & JV teams feed into Varsity. Let’s support our athletes and coaches  and build our VB program, giving our younger players something to strive for.

So, if you write a check to:

 It pays for:

 Soquel High Fund

Uniforms, equip., is parent run & tax deduct.

 Soquel High Athletics

 Refs, Umps, Fees, General

 Soquel High Sports Foundation

 Facilities Improvement, Primarily Fields/Football

 Soquel High, Girls/Boys Volleyball

 Tourney Fees, Coach’s discretion

Q:     Can you tell me something about Club Volleyball?
A:     Very briefly, Club Volleyball provides an opportunity to play VB just about year-round. All tryouts are open@ (anyone can tryout), take place from early November to December of each year, and programs differ in cost ($600-$5000) according to practice times and locations, number of tournaments played, and travel distance.  Athletic philosophies vary! The season is from late Fall to early June or July depending on the club. For more info:
