Students’ attire is expected to be neat, clean and appropriate. Students who are dressed inappropriately for school will be asked to cover up or to call home to have appropriate clothing delivered. Repeat offenses may be considered defiance and result in suspension.
The following WILL NOT be permitted while attending Soquel High classes and school events:
Bare feet
Excessive exposure of midriff
Strapless or backless tops
Torn or ragged clothing that allows inappropriate exposure
Excessively revealing or low cut tops or tank tops
See-through or revealing material
Undergarments worn as a top layer of clothing
Shorts or skirts that are excessively short
Pants that are slung so low as to reveal undergarments
Clothing that insults, demeans or harasses any person on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
Clothing that insults, demeans or harasses any person on the basis of a physical or mental disability
Apparel, jewelry or accessory items which make reference to drugs, alcohol, tobacco or and other controlled substance
Apparel, jewelry or
accessory items that could pose a threat to the physical well-being and
safety of student or staff. May include but not limited to:
Spiked clothing, jewelry or accessory
Steel-toed boots
Oversized chains attached to wallets, watches, etc.
Apparel that supports or affiliates an individual with violent acts or groups that support violence
Apparel that contains
reference or is specifically identifiable as belonging to a gang or
disruptive group or individual by sign, trademarks, numbers, symbols,
or colors (NOTE: A student may wear no more than one article of clothing that is one of the following at any one time: blue, red or brown.)
Clothing that distracts or disrupts the normal functioning of the school or classroom.
Gang Attire
Unfortunately, we live in a
society where gangs and gang violence are a reality. Certain colors
and fashions are associated with gangs. Students who dress in a manner
associated with a particular gang may become targets for gang violence
whether or not they themselves are part of any gang. For this reason,
gang-related clothing is not allowed. Articles of clothing suggesting
gang affiliation would include the following:
Wearing two or more items of a particular color, particularly red or blue (excluding school sports uniforms).
Bandannas, either in pockets or otherwise.
Professional sports jerseys displaying the numbers 13, 14, 3, or 4 are prohibited.
“Doorags” or skullcaps.
Hairnets.
Hoods (Hoods may be worn if it is raining or cold.)
Hats, beanies or knit caps associated with specific gangs.
Gloves.
Wristbands.
Headbands.
Extremely long belts and watch chains.
Numbered items (XIII, 13, XIV, 14 etc.)
Jewelry commonly held to be gang apparel.
Dressed entirely in one color such as blue, brown, red or tan.
Any display of gang-related tags or signs is prohibited.
