Beginning with the class of 2007, students will need to complete a
writing portfolio as one of the requirements for graduation.
The
following elements will be required.
-
Reading informational materials and public documents
-
Control of conventions
-
Report or narrative essay
-
Quantity, range, and depth of reading
-
Persuasive essay
-
Response to literature
Students graduating in 2008 will be required to complete 4 of
the pieces. Students graduating in 2009 and later will be required to
complete all six pieces. In order to earn credit toward graduation,
all pieces must demonstrate mastery at a high 10th grade performance
level.
The portfolio requirement will be worked on in English classes. For
the class of 2009, the first three elements will be introduced in Grade
9, and the second three will be introduced in Grade 10. Students will
be provided opportunities in each successive year, through the 12th
grade, as needed, to successfully complete the portfolio requirement.
For the class of 2008, opportunities to work on the four required
pieces will be made available in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years.
For the class of 2007, opportunities to work on the two required pieces
will be made available in the 11th and 12th grade years.
Students who have not met the portfolio requirement at the end of the
junior year will be required to participate in Santa Cruz City Schools
Language Arts instruction during the fall semester of the senior year.
Portfolios will be stored at the school site, and will be turned over
to the student only after they have been satisfactorily completed and
the successful meeting of the requirements has been recorded.
Students in Special Education, identified as an English Language
Learner, or performing below grade level may qualify for a modified
portfolio requirement. The IEP team, Language Review Team, or the ELA
Portfolio Review Team will decide if modifications are appropriate.
Please contact Mr. Lawrence-Emanuel for more information.
Students who transfer into Santa Cruz City Schools as sophomores will
be responsible for completing four of the six components. Students who
transfer into Santa Cruz City Schools as juniors will be responsible
for completing two of the six components. Students who transfer into
Santa Cruz City Schools as seniors will be exempt from the requirement
unless they transfer from a district with a similar requirement.
Additional questions about the English Language Arts Portfolio may be
directed to your student’s English teacher, or to Mr. Lawrence-Emanuel
in the Counseling Center.
