UPCOMING EVENTS

PANCAKE BREAKFAST AND CONCERT 

The Soquel High School Music Department will be presenting its 28th Annual “All You Can Eat” Pancake Breakfast & Concert tomorrow (Saturday, 1/19) from 7–11am in the Soquel High Multi-Purpose Room. Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast while listening to the exceptional sounds of Soquel High School bands & choirs, all for only $5.00 per person at the door. For more information, call 475-0131. 

 

STUDY FEST IS HAPPENING AGAIN!

What is Study Fest?

Study Fest is when teachers and students share the common goal of getting better scores on their finals.  When and where is this amazing event? January 19, in the Soquel High Library from 11-2. How can I help make this event better? Food donations delivered that day (food is a major incentive for students to attend) and asking and/or encouraging your student to attend.  Thank you, we hope to see your teen at the library on January 19!

 

OPEN HOUSE

The annual Soquel High Open House will be on Tuesday, Feb. 12. All parents are welcome. 

6:00--6:45pm    General Session in MPR

6:45--8:30pm    Department displays in locations throughout campus

 

SAVE THE DATE

The 4th Annual Soquel High Fund Golf Tournament will be held Friday, May 9 at DeLaveaga Golf Course. Pick up registration forms in the front office by Cheryl’s desk or get them from the school website by clicking on Parent Groups, Soquel High Fund, Golf Tourney registration form.

 

GRAD NIGHT WINE TASTING AND SILENT AUCTION                                                                     

February 23 from 2-6pm at Michael’s on Main. Tickets are on sale for $25 and will be available at the door the day of the event or by contacting Vicki Rubalcaba at 475-4897. All money raised will go directly to the senior grad night festivities in June.

 

JANUARY PARENT MEETINGS

Site Council – Tues., Jan 22 at 3:15 

Grad Night – Every Wednesday at 6:30 in the library through Feb. 20. All parents are encouraged to come and participate.

 

NO SCHOOL

School will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21, Friday, Jan. 25, and Monday, Jan. 28.

  

STUDENTS

FORMAL BIDS:  are on sale NOW! Come to the Student Store EARLY to save....$60 with ASB CARD for a double bid, $65 without. Formal is on February 1. 

In order to be able to attend the Winter Formal, students must have all fees cleared, no Saturday School time left, and no suspensions during the school year.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE: Juniors or seniors who have a job may be eligible to receive a grade and credits for the hours they work. See Mr. Myers in the Athletic Office.

SPRING SPORTS....start February 1. All athletes need to receive clearance to participate.  Come to the Athletics Office at brunch or lunch.

Restrooms, Snack-bar, Entrance Design - If you are interested in seeing the conceptual drawing for restrooms, snack-bar, and entrance, call Kathy Grant 475-8884. I will attempt to find a place to display at school. Remember, volunteers are needed!  [Labor, Plumbing, Electrical, Donation Solicitors, Grant Writers, etc.]

 

As the stadium is used by several sports, we are interested in hearing from each sport as to what their needs are and how they can benefit.  If you have a specific item, please let us know.  We can't promise we'll get everything to be exactly what everyone wants, but if we don't know what you want, we can't try!  I will be creating a survey, so let me know if you would like to participate. Tuesday, Jan. 29, is the first day of the second semester. Students should report to school early to pick up their new schedules. Some students will have changes in their schedules.

 

AP EXAM FEE WAIVER APPLICATIONS are now available for students with financial need.  See Ms. Whitmore in her office to pick one up.

 

A FIRST RESPONDER COURSE (Advanced First Aid and CPR) will be held on Thursday evenings and Saturdays this spring at Emergency Training Services Inc. in Santa Cruz. The cost is $150 for high school students, and students must be at least 16 years old. For information, call 476-8813.

 

ENGINEERING

Curious about a career in Engineering? Cabrillo College is offering Engr. 5 during the spring semester (Feb-May) to help students interested in exploring the many options of an engineering career. The class will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursdays. Show up the first day of class, Feb. 14, or pre-register through Cabrillo’s regisration process. A FREE two-week engineering summer institute will be held June 15-27 at San Francisco State University. The program, sponsored by the California Department of Transportation and the SFSU MESA program, will cover “What is Engineering?” and “How to Become and Engineer.” The institute is for juniors and seniors interested in the engineering and technology fields. SAN JOSE STATE has revised its earlier dates for registration for incoming freshman. Current seniors must apply by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15. Apply at www.CSUMentor.edu. All final transcripts, test scores, and other supporting documents must be postmarked by Tuesday, July 15.

 

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AIDE – Soquel High parents have been invited to workshops on how to fill out the FAFSA federal financial aide application for college.

      The meetings will be at Cabrillo College – at three different times and locations: a. from 5-8 p.m. Wed., Feb. 6, at the Cabrillo Scotts Valley Center, 104 Whispering Pines Drive, Scotts Valley; b. from 5-8 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 7., at the Cabrillo Watsonville Center, Student Resource Center, 318 Union St., Watsonville; and c. from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Cabrillo’s Aptos Campus, Student Activities Center Room 201, 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos.

      To prepare for applying online, both the parent and the student will need to register for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. Also, do bring to the workshops: 1. Your FAFSA on the web worksheet, available at www.fafsa.ed.gov; 2. Student’s Social Security Card and Driver’s License or state ID; 3. Student’s and parent’s 2007 Federal Tax Returns and W2s; 4. Student’s and parent’s 2007 bank and investment statements; 5. Any records of untaxed income; 6. Student’s alien registration (if not a citizen); and 7. a calculator.
