CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to our Girls and Boys Basketball teams for the great seasons they played this year! The girls finished their SCCAL games with a perfect 12-0 season, and the boys finished their season 10–2, with the most league wins. 

Congratulations also goes out to the boys soccer team, who came in second place in SCCAL, finishing the season 9-8-2. 

SCCAL BASKETBALL PLAY-OFFS
Soquel girls beat SLV 58-33 in the semi-finals and will play St. Francis for the championship tonight at 7 p.m. at Cabrillo College. 

The Soquel boys team beat Harbor 74-56 in last night’s semi-finals. They will play Aptos in the championship game on Sat. at 7 p.m. at Cabrillo. 

CCS PLAY-OFFS
The Soquel boys soccer team competed in the first round of the CCS play-offs Wed. against St. Francis of Mtn. View, and after a hard-fought game, lost 2-0.

Soquel High School Pool Closure
With great reluctance, we must announce that the pools at Soquel High School are closed until further notice, effective 2/14/08. Go to Athletics Swimming for more information.

DRUG ABUSE RECOGNITION TRAINING FOR PARENTS
Date: February 21, 2008 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Location: Tech Center at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education

Officer Jackie Long, Drug Abuse Recognition trainer and expert from the Department of Justice will share current trends in drug abuse, warning signs, and how to recognize a person under the influence.

GRAD NIGHT WINE TASTING AND SILENT AUCTION
February 23 from 2-6 p.m. at Michael’s on Main. Tickets are on sale for $25 and will be available at the door the day of the event or by contacting Vicki Rubalcaba at 475-4897. All money raised will go directly to the senior grad night festivities in June, so come out and have fun supporting our seniors!

SOPHOMORE/JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP

The Matt’s Climb Scholarship
Deadline: March 21, 2008

Available to sophomores and juniors who will be at least 16 years of age as of July 1, 2008. This scholarship provides a total of up to $3,500 toward participation in a wilderness course offered by the National Outdoor Leadership School. Visit the website: www.cfscc.org. Applications available in the scholarship drawer in the counseling office.  

YEARBOOK
Yearbooks are on sale now in the Finance Office for $85.  Please make checks out to Soquel High Yearbook. The price will go up to $90 April 1.

Unfortunately, they are no longer able to accept senior ads, and students cannot get their names or emblems engraved on the book.

If any local businesses are interested in purchasing an ad in the book, please call Annie Zachan ASAP (ext 220) because time is running out! 

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The Boardwalk is hiring again for weekends, Spring Break, and summer. See Cheryl in the front office if you’re interested.  

FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
A reminder…With counselor Karen Gilchrist will be out for the rest of the year, students with last names beginning in A to Ch should now see Gail Atlansky. Students with last names beginning in Ci to G should see Teresa Robinson. 

COURSE SIGN-UPS
School counselors will begin visiting 10th graders during their English classes the week of Feb. 27 to help them plan their courses for next year and beyond. Ninth and 11th graders will receive course sign-up sheets the week of March 11. 

Exciting new ROP courses will be presented at an ROP Course Faire in the quad at brunch on Wed., Feb. 20. 

COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS

SENIORS – The FAFSA federal financial aide form and the Cal Grant GPA verification form are due March 2. These can provide thousands of dollars in cash to college entrants. See your counselor for more information.

 

MID YEAR COLLEGE REPORTS – Seniors! Be sure and ask your counselor for a mid-year college report if the private college to which you are applying requires one. These reports include your first semester grades and generally are due now.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Omega NU                                  Deadline:  March 28, 2008

Scholarships in the amounts of $500 - $2000 awarded to high school seniors who are currently enrolled at Aptos, Harbor, Santa Cruz, Soquel, SLV, or Scotts Valley are eligible. Students must have an overall GPA of 3.0, and/or college potential as recommended by a counselor.  Students must be in need of financial aid and plan on attending a California State College or University. Personal and financial information including tax forms will be requested. See scholarship drawer for an application.

 

Cabrillo Civic Clubs                            Deadline: March 15, 2008

One hundred scholarships available in the amount of $500 each to be given out to students in California. Students must be of Portuguese descent on father’s or mother’s side. Be a US citizen or permanent resident, have maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA and be a graduating senior. Also needs to have participated in at least 3 extra-curricular activities while in high school. Applications available in scholarship drawer.

 

California Women for Agriculture              Deadline April 25, 2008

2 scholarships available:

Scholarship A – Women Pursuing Degrees in Agriculture Scholarship

Must be a female resident of Monterey, San Benito or Santa Cruz County.

Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (4 year), an Associate’s Degree (2 year) or a degree from an accredited trade school in agriculture or related subject area.

 

Scholarship B – Farm Workers Scholarship

Must be a female employed as a farm laborer or have at least one parent or a spouse who has been employed as a farm laborer for two consecutive seasons in Monterey, San Benito or Santa Cruz County.

Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (4 year), an Associates Degree (2 year), or a degree from an accredited trade school in any subject area.

 

Both applications are available in the scholarship drawer in the counseling office.

 

La Selva Beach Woman’s Club               Deadline: February 29, 2008

Applicants must be a resident of Aptos, La Selva, Watsonville or other areas within Santa Cruz County. Looking for students who are community minded, that find time in their busy schedules to help those less fortunate than themselves. Must be able to show evidence of acceptance to an accredited College or University. Be able to define goals and outline plans for the use of the scholarship. Applications available in the scholarship drawer.

 

California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers   Deadline: April 1, 2008

Monterey Bay Chapter

Up to $6,000 in scholarships available to students enrolling in Horticulture related college programs. See scholarship drawer for application and further instructions.
