“HISTORY NERDS” BATTLE FOR THE CANNON

You’ve heard of the Battle for the Stump now there’s the battle for the Cannon.

The first annual AP US History Review Battle with Santa Cruz High was a great success!  Though Santa Cruz High's AP US History students won by a very narrow margin, everyone had a good time and had a chance to review for the upcoming AP test.  We'll bring home the Review Battle Cannon next year for Soquel!

SOMU CALAMARI DINNER

Date:  May 10th.  Seatings are at 6:00 and 7:00pm.  Tickets cost $10.
Come listen to great music by the Jazz Singers and the Jazz Band, while enjoying a fabulous dinner and supporting the music department.

SPRING MUSICAL - URINETOWN! THE MUSICAL

SOFTBALL FUNDRAISER - DRAWING TICKETS FOR 3 DAY - 2 NIGHT WEEKEND IN SO LAKE TAHOE, CA and a FREE Barrel Wine Tasting at Wofford Acres Vineyards.

The Lady Knights are selling tickets for a Weekend Stay in South Lake Tahoe.  The 3 bedroom/2 bath cabin sleeps 8.

Tickets cost $5.00 each or 6 for $25.00.  The drawing will be held on May 15th.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

The Capitola Art and Cultural Commission would like to invite the community to participate in a pubic art project

The 2008 Capitola Sea Wall Tile Art Project.  Create you own ceramic tile to permanently decorate the sea wall along the Capitola Esplanade. The theme is “Capitola Memories–Sand, Sun and Sea”. Anyone may participate. The $35 fee includes an 8” x 6” ceramic tile, glazing, firing, staff instruction and assistance at Petroglyph.

For more information or to purchase your voucher for tiles, contact the Capitola/Soquel Chamber of Commerce. Tile vouchers are available though May 16th. Quantity is limited, so hurry!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

May 19-May 23.  If you want to enter your band into this contest of musical talent, you must sign up in the front office by Friday, May 2.

FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

STAR TESTING – STAR testing will continue at Soquel High through May 12. Next week math tests will be held in all math classes. During the final week, testing will be held in History and Science classes. Seniors are not required to take this test.

ROP ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE class will also be taught at Santa Cruz High Tues/Thursdays 6-8PM, so if you're not an early bird for the Soquel High AJ class, this one's for you!

ENGINE REPAIR - ROP is offering an engine repair class this summer to Soquel students, including graduating seniors. The class will be from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, June 23 to July 23, at Santa Cruz High, Room 42. Please register with Farol Henderson or call 477-5525.

WANT TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? - Learn what it takes in only six afternoon sessions at Cabrillo. You will meet with inspiring business mentors and earn high school credit. If you're interested in signing up for this course next fall, see your counselor for a registration form.

UCSC SCHOLARS - All juniors interested in taking a class at UC Santa Cruz next year, as part of the UCSC Scholars Program, should visit www.ucsc-extension.edu. Further information can be obtained by calling Charlotte Walker at 427-6606. 

DENTAL ASSISTING – Any interested students who want to take the ROP Dental Assisting course next year must attend a mandatory orientation meeting from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Harbor High, Portable 1. Students will need to be seniors next year – or very motivated juniors – in order to take the course.

THE CABRILLO SUMMER SCHEDULE is now out and available on-line. Get a high school release form now, as classes fill up quickly.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING:

1) The Honors American Lit writing assessment for current 10th graders will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday, May 2 in the library.
2) The AP US History writing assessment for current 10th graders will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday, May 9 in the library.

COLLEGE TESTING – The registration deadline for the June 14 ACT is May 9th. The registration deadline for the June 7 SAT is May 6.

Remember to pick up and fill out the required paperwork and get a parent’s signature.

CABRILLO COLLEGE – Seniors who want to go to Cabrillo next year should come to an orientation session at lunch on Monday, April 28, in the Soquel High library. Scores on their math and English placement tests that they took April 19 will be distributed at the orientation, and students will learn what math and English classes they should take next year at Cabrillo.

SCHOLARSHIPS

2008 Alice B. Woolsey Scholarship                      Deadline:  June 13, 2008

Former New Brighton Students who are planning on attending a 2 or 4 year college as a full time student in the fall of 2008 can apply for this $500 scholarship.  Criteria - 100 points possible:  Overall GPA: 20 pts., Community Service (40pts), Essay 40 pts.  Applications in scholarship drawer or at the following website: www.soqueldo.santacruz.k12.ca.us

Caps & Gowns
HERFF JONES will be here to hand out caps and gowns AND unclaimed announcements and invitations on Monday, May 5 during brunch and lunch.  Anyone NOT picking these items up at that time will have to do so through Cheryl in the front office at a charge of $5.  PLEASE DON'T FORGET!!!!!

Fines
Please check list of overdue textbooks posted on the door of the Textbook Room.  Books must be returned or bills paid before yearbook distribution, prom, and graduation.
