MONTE FIREWORK TICKETS FOR SALE - See your sports team or call Kathy Grant 475-8884 (SSF can accept cash, checks, or credit cards [for credit cards: 3% fee applies - which is 45 cents a ticket]). $15 each. Event is Oct. 11.
MONTE FIREWORK BOOTH DONATIONS NEEDED! We are looking for donations for our food booth this Saturday. We have purchased most of what we need - so cash donations would be greatly appreciated - money can be donated next week. Or, if you plan on going - remember to stop by and purchase food from us! Remember, we all win when we have new restrooms and snack-bar - so come help us raise the money - we need your help! We will be selling polish dogs/hot dogs, chips, and drinks. FOOTBALL SOUVENIR PROGRAM. Come to the JV/VAR game this Friday night and a special treat awaits the person the buys a program with special signature inside the program. Programs are beautiful and only cost $3. These are nice - buy one to use and one for memories! Thanks to Lynne Owen and Niche Photography and Janis Armacost for a beautiful job! BINGO - Every Tuesday, at the SC Elks Lodge, 150 Jewell Street, Santa Cruz. Doors open at 5 p.m.; warm ups at 6:15 p.m.; and games at 6:30 p.m. EVERYONE is encouraged to come play bingo and help us raise money. The buy-in is $15 and you will have fun! Bring dinner money as there is a fully-catered menu by 5-Star Catering with reasonable pricing! So join us and bring a friend!

$1,000 scholarships awarded to seniors who have demonstrated the following:
· Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
· Work part-time an average of 15 hours per week
· Actively involved in community service activities
· Demonstrate financial need
· Plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall of the application year.
Students DO NOT have to be employees of Burger King to be eligible.

Horatio Alger Association: Deadline October 30, 2008
$4,000 scholarships (37 total – California Only)
The Horatio Alger Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the state of California who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
· Enrolled fulltime as a high school senior in California. Plan to enter college no later than the fall following graduation.
· Have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution. Students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution.
· Critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred)
· Involvement in co-curricular and community activities
· Demonstrate academic achievement (minimum GPA of 2.0)
· Be a resident of California and a citizen of the United States

Santa Cruz Elks Most Valuable Student: Deadline January 9, 2009
Santa Cruz Elks Lodge has 6 scholarships for graduating seniors in this area. There is a first, second and third place for both a boy and a girl from the lodge. Total scholarships are $3,000. The first place students go on to compete in the District contest, on to the State and then on to the National competition. Local students have won $800-$1,000. The Elks Most Valuable Student can win up to $15,000 a year for four years!!! Any high school senior is eligible. Elks National Foundation
In addition to Merit Scholarships, such as the Elks Most Valuable Student, the Elks also have disability scholarships and scholarships for the children and grandchildren of an Elk. Applications for any of these may be downloaded from the Elks website www.elks.org/enf/scholars .
AXA Achievement: Deadline December 15, 2008
National -
· $10,000 scholarships to 52 students (one in each state)
· $15,000 additional scholarships to 10 national recipients chosen from the pool of 52 state winners. The national scholarship winners will also be offered internships at AXA offices. To qualify students must demonstrate:

Determination to set and reach goals
Respect for self, family and community
Ability to succeed in college

Twenty scholarships from Good Tidings in the amount of $5,000 each (20 total) will be awarded to students residing in the Central Coast and Greater Bay Area. Good Tidings is a non-profit charity that empowers students to reach their dreams. The scholarships are awarded to seniors who recognize the benefits of serving their communities. All are encouraged to apply, but consideration is given to those of greatest needs. Applications are available in the scholarship drawer in the counseling office. DEADLINE: Nov. 10.

SPRING HOST FAMILY NEEDED
A host family is being sought for Kim Zarah Jungbluth from Germany. Coming for the 2009 Spring semester, Kimmi is 17 and will be in the 11th grade. She wants to become a designer, is a member of a ballet company, likes art, surfing, volleyball, plays guitar & saxophone, loves her family and friends and says she's "always there for people who need her."
Like all the past students, she's excited about the opportunity to live with & get to know an American family and attend high school in Santa Cruz. She says it's her dream.

TEST OPPORTUNITIES
The PSAT exam for juniors and interested sophomores will be given Oct. 18. Students may register for the PSAT in the Finance Office. There are a limited number of PSAT tests available. Registration fees are $30.
ATTENDANCE REMINDER
If a student is absent for a full day, you can bring a note the next morning, or you can have a parent call right away. But, if you leave school during the day, bring a note that morning to get a pass, or show up with a live parent, no substitutes, at the attendance window.
REMINDERS FOR SENIORS
Many have yet to schedule a Senior Conference with your counselor. This conference is mandatory! If you are planning on requesting a letter of recommendation from your counselor, all requests must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the deadline.
STATE OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNIORS
Any junior that would be interested in serving as a student representative on The California State Board of Education, in Sacramento, during the 2009/2010 academic year should contact the Administrative Assistant to The Principal for details on the application process.
